On Saturday, October 12th we will walk in Marnie's memory once again at the Walk to Defeat ALS. This will be the 19th year in a row that we have walked as "Marnie's Party." It's always been important to me to walk in my mom's memory at the Walk to Defeat ALS. Like last year, I will also be walking in memory of my dad, as her caregiver and advocate during her battle, and what it meant to him to continue that fight long after she was gone.
It is our hope, that as research moves forward, Marnie and Richard's grandchildren will someday celebrate with our family the discovery of a cure to what took the grandmother they never knew. Until then, we walk each year to raise money for families like ours once was, and for the research that we hope will someday remove ALS from the world.
ALS, commonly referred to as Lou Gehrig's disease, has no known cause or cure, and is typically fatal in two to five years. It destroys the motor neurons in the brain, causing methodical paralysis of the entire body, leaving its victim unable to speak, eat, and ultimately, unable to breathe. Through all of this, the victims mind is, almost cruelly, left unaffected. Many years may have passed since we watched our brave wife and mother endure this process, but we have not forgotten the terror ALS inflicts on the family. The emotional and financial strain becomes severe on members of the family as well as the ALS victim. We know very well how much any help at all can mean to these families.
This is why we participate each year in the ALS Association DC/MD/VA chapter's Walk to Defeat ALS. The money raised for this event makes a tremendous impact on the ALS Association's ability to help patients and families cope with the day to day challenges of living with ALS. They provide information, resources, and referrals to many sources, including a wide variety of community services. The money also helps fund advocacy and research into what causes ALS, and how it might be stopped someday. We will never forget how the ALS Association helped Marnie and our family. The least we can do is give back to them in an effort to help families like ours.
Please join us in the fight against ALS by joining our team, Marnie's Party, and walking with us and/or making a contribution in support of us. With your involvement, we can help make a difference in the lives of all ALS patients and their families.
