In November 2019, my sister Erin Brady was diagnosed with ALS (Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis). Erin is 29 years old, with a loving husband, two beautiful daughters and another baby girl to arrive in July. Erin is a role model for all who know her. She has spent her entire life inspiring and giving back to others through her passion for dance.
ALS, also commonly known as Lou Gehrig's disease, is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord. Motor neurons reach from the brain to the spinal cord and from the spinal cord to the muscles throughout the body. When the motor neurons die, the ability of the brain to initiate and control muscle movement is lost. With voluntary muscle action progressively affected, patients in the later stages of the disease may become totally paralyzed. There is currently no cure for ALS, just treatments that may allow for a more comfortable life.
Erin has the most generous heart. She grew up in two worlds, one that was focused on the love of dance and one that was focused giving back to others. As a dancer for over 21 years, Erin believed that the best way to express oneself was through the movement of dance. At the age of 24, she opened her own dance studio and was able to share her love of dance with the whole community. Erin has touched the lives of many and has fostered a sense of community wherever she has gone. And, she accomplished all of this while being an incredible wife, sister, daughter and mother to her family. To say I am one proud big sister would be an understatement.
While the future holds some uncertainty and hardships for Erin and her family, one thing is clear: Erin is a strong, passionate fighter and now she is in the fight of her life. It is our time to stand up with Erin and show her she is not alone, that she has an army behind her cheering her on with love and support.
