Our team is walking in memory of my father, John Biener, who passed away with ALS in 2015 after celebrating his 60th birthday. The disease took him quickly, within a couple of years after diagnosis. Upon being told my dad had ALS, I was confounded to discover there was no cure, and yet the disease would ultimately lead to a terrifying death in only a handful of years. Eight years later, there are better ALS treatments available but still no cure. We are therefore walking to both raise money and spread awareness of the urgency to find one. Nobody should have to experience the horror of one’s muscles slowly breaking down until walking, eating, and speaking is impossible and taking just one breath is a struggle. Nobody should have to watch a loved one suffer in this way.
