On September 24th, Mayer's Minions will join the ALS Walk in Portland for the 4th time. It would be great if this year our team comes in First Place in the fundraising as we did last year. Even better would be our raising more than last year!
Recently, there have been exciting advances in the research to find the cause of ALS, but it is not likely that there will be a proven treatment available soon enough to help those currently with ALS. For that reason, it is all the more important that all the funds raised in the Walks are used by the association to offer vital help to local people with ALS, including loaning equipment and offering a wide range of services. Though eventually Mayer was able to obtain some equipment through the VA, he received several ALS Loan Closet items that he used until he died, such as the excellent wheelchair. It was their services that gave invaluable support to both of us from his diagnosis until his death -- the informative books, the support groups, and the talks to prepare us for the journey ahead. Since Mayer's death, they have continued to offer me support.
As is true for many people my age, I have quite a few friends who have other challenging, life-threatening diseases and conditions so that I have an ever-lengthening list of organizations that I continue to support. Unlike some folks, I'm not a natural fundraiser -- even selling Girl Scout cookies was difficult for me. Yet knowing from firsthand experience how important the work of the ALS Association is and knowing that most people do not have the resources we had to cover the many expenses of ALS (the meds, supplies, and caregivers), I will continue to do the Walks, no matter the number of walkers or the amount that is raised. I can understand why it may happen that for many people there's not the urgency to donate since Mayer's death, but I hope those persons will see that even giving a small amount annually can help raise a significant amount when part of a large group of folks giving a wide range of amounts. Last year, I was fortunate to be able to match the donations of the rest of the teammates and will do that again this year with the cap of my match at $10,000. Hey, wouldn't it be great if that cap was surpassed and I have to raise my cap!
I’m already looking forward to seeing returning walkers and new ones come September 24th!
