As many of you know, Kevin Trotta - our beloved husband and father- was diagnosed with ALS in the spring of 2013. ALS stole his life on December 30th, 2016.
Often referred to as Lou Gehrig's Disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a progressive, fatal neuromuscular disease that slowly robs the body of its ability to walk, speak, swallow and breathe. The life expectancy of an ALS patient averages 2 to 5 years from the time of diagnosis.
Kevin (Dad) was always an extremely active man. Following his diagnosis, he continued to hike, bike ride, and exercise. He actively researched all different approaches for treating this horrible disease. With vitamins, nutrition, rest, and hydration, he managed to retain his quality of life for longer than most. But his last two years were brutal. ALS robbed him of his mobility, his dexterity, and his voice. He struggled to communicate and move, spent most of his time on his vent, and became increasingly less independent. Sadly, he lost his personal battle but the war against motor neuron disease continues....
The thing is, our family is not alone in this. Every 90 minutes another person in this country is diagnosed with ALS. Worse yet, every 90 minutes another person will lose their battle against this disease. ALS occurs throughout the world with no racial, ethnic, or socioeconomic boundaries. Presently there is no known cause of the disease, though support is bringing researchers closer to an answer. In the meantime, it costs an average of $250,000 to provide the care ALS patients need. Adequate support is simply not provided, and even in the medical field, so few people know how to help someone with ALS.
So like many other families across the world, we are dedicating ourselves to helping support the effort to find the cause of ALS and, hopefully, identify a cure.
That is why we have decided to once again participate in this Hudson Valley Walk to Defeat ALS. We had a very successful walk for six years running - joined by many of you. We hope to make this year even more successful! You can help in many different ways:
- You can join our team and walk with us on October 20th. By raising money through donations and encouraging new walkers on your personal team member page, you help us reach our team goal. We can tell you from our own experience that the walk is not only a way to be a part of an important cause - it is also a really fun day!
-You can donate to either of us or any other participant on our Trotting for Trotta team and keep us in your thoughts on the 20th.
-You can choose to do it all: join our team, donate to our team personally, and be part of our fundraising effort on your own.
Whatever choice you make, we appreciate any way in which you can help us. Thank you, in advance, for considering to help us reach our Walk to Defeat ALS® fundraising goal! This is an exciting opportunity for us to work together to walk in memory of Kevin (Dad) and those affected by Lou Gehrig's Disease and to spread awareness of the urgency to find treatments and a cure. With your help, we will be able to make a difference in the lives of people affected by this disease. We encourage you to get your friends, family, neighbors, and coworkers involved!
Our family will be walking together this year, though Kevin (Dad) is no longer with us. We will continue to walk every year until a cure is found and this awful disease is no more. Please help us take an important step toward achieving that dream. Let's make this year our best yet!
