Numotion Joins Forces with The ALS Association to Improve Quality of Life for People with ALS

Chances are if you’ve visited a Recognized Treatment Center or Certified Treatment Center of Excellence, you’ve met a Numotion representative eager to assist you with your mobility needs. Numotion employees are deeply committed to making life for people coping with ALS easier to navigate.

From power wheelchairs, different types of seating systems, augmented drive systems, beds, patient lifts and more, Numotion is an example of a complex rehabilitation provider that offers an extensive selection of mobility products backed by a superior commitment to ongoing service and support.

A Drive Fueled by Expertise and Compassion

John V. Pryles, Senior Vice President of Sales for Numotion estimates that among the company’s 3,000 employees, 60 to 70 percent have a deep personal connection to ALS.

“Our employees are without a doubt our greatest asset, bar none,” said Pryles. “They are just so passionate and so caring and so connected to what they do.”

A hallmark of the company’s success is its dedicated team, which consistently goes above and beyond by participating and sponsoring support groups in the Walk to Defeat ALS and other important fundraising initiatives. Numotion also generously provides space and equipment to help support many ALS Association Chapter equipment loan programs.

The Numotion team itself is comprised of highly-skilled practitioners. During an ALS clinic visit, you may have the opportunity to meet with an accredited Numotion assistive technology professional (ATP) that has completed rigorous classroom and field training in addition to sitting for an intensive licensing exam assuring their expertise.

“We really see ourselves as a service company,” explained Pryles, who also began his career as an assistive technology professional. “Whatever it is, we try to make everything we do very personal and not take anything for granted by staying humble and connected to those we serve.”

Assuring Access to Complex Rehab Technology (CRT)

Recent Medicare changes are threatening access to needed CRT items for many people living with ALS. CRT products include specialized wheelchairs, seating, positioning and adaptive equipment. Numotion is fighting on the frontlines along with others, including The ALS Association, to raise awareness and protect access to these needed products.

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) recently announced that beginning in January 2016, complex rehab wheelchair accessories such as seat/back cushions, recline/tilt systems, specialty controls, etc., may be reimbursed at the reduced payment rates found in Medicare’s competitive bidding program. Such a change could limit patient access to these critical technologies. The change violates the intent of a 2008 law, supported by The ALS Association, that exempts CRT wheelchair accessories from the competitive bidding program.

“Together, our organizations are working to oppose changes in Medicare coverage that may impact a person’s ability to access CRT,” explained Pryles.

The Association in partnership with Numotion is also working closely to advance legislation that would provide appropriate recognition and coverage of complex rehab technology (CRT) by creating a separate benefit category within the existing Medicare program. This would result in CRT being classified in its own category separate from standard Durable Medical Equipment items such as commodes, hospital beds, and basic wheelchairs. This distinction would allow for the creation of CRT-specific policies regarding coverage, coding, and supplier standards.
