It’s an affirmative: for people with ALS who are especially vulnerable to potentially dangerous germs, getting a flu vaccine is a smart move. The flu shot comes bundled with seasonal protection against H1N1and Influenza A and B all in one vaccine. Edward Kasarskis, M.D., Ph.D., and Director of the Kentucky Neurosciences Institute, an ALS Association Certified Treatment Center of Excellence, also recommends the pneumonia vaccine to help create a defense against a lung infection caused by pneumococcus bacteria.  “Immunity to pneumococcus lasts several years,” Dr. Kasarskis says, “but you need a new flu shot each year.”
