Eleanor and Lou Gehrig ALS Center at Columbia University
Pilot Co-Q10 with Neuroimaging Studies

Closed trial entry is full nationwide

This study is being conducted based on previous pilot data collected at our Center in a prior CoQ10 study. It is important to conduct more studies of the effectiveness of CoQ10 for people with ALS as rapidly and efficiently as possible to get answers to patients and clinicians.

Dr. Petra Kaufmann at the Eleanor and Lou Gehrig MDA/ALS Center will investigate the effects of CoQ10 in people with ALS. This is a pilot study to determine if CoQ10 has short-term effects on motor nerves in the brain using magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS), a test similar to MRI. If CoQ10 can be "seen" to change the chemicals in the brains's upper motor nerves, it will be important to the next step of the investigation.

Enrollment for patients in this study began in October 2001. There will be one MRS required at the beginning and end of the study for each patient. The CoQ10 will be high dose, oral administration taken for four weeks with the option of receiving 6 months of CoQ10 after the 4 week study period.
