Project Summary
This clinical trial will compare the safety as well as seek a slowed rate of functional decline in ALS patients of two different combination therapies. Both combinations have proved effective in rodent models of the disease, prolonging survival by about 30 percent. Each combination has worked better, as tested in rodents, than the single drugs by themselves. An innovative trial design will allow efficient comparison of two separate, combination treatments. The two treatments are minocycline and creatine, and celecoxib and creatine. Patients enrolled will be randomly selected to receive one of these two combination therapies. If one or both should produce lesser decline in the ALS Functional Rating Scale, compared to a historic control group, further testing will proceed under an expanded, Phase III protocol with a placebo control.
