Every Bucket

By Larry Kaplan

Twenty years ago, ALS became my fight. Not because I was diagnosed or one of my friends or loved ones was confronted with the disease.

It was 1993. I owned a sports memorabilia store when Major League Baseball player Curt Schilling, who was active in the cause, came in to do a signing.

I was instantly inspired by his dedication to the fight against ALS and started volunteering with my local ALS Association chapter, helping with annual fundraising events alongside my wife.

What inspired me most was the connection I felt to people living with ALS.

Anyone can be diagnosed – it’s the kind of thing that comes out of nowhere and takes your life in a completely unexpected direction.

My wife and I were driven to make families’ lives as comfortable as possible, and The ALS Association does that by taking care of their needs. I know if I were in that position, I’d want someone helping me.

Two years ago, the world participated in the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge. This year, I’m going to do something which might sound crazy:

50 ALS Ice Bucket Challenges in 50 states over 31 days.

Most of these challenges won’t actually involve ice or water. In Vermont, it might be maple syrup, or in Florida, orange juice! Regardless, every bucket will add up to finding a treatment for this disease.

It can cost up to $2 billion to find a treatment to help slow or stop ALS. Until we have a treatment or a cure, I’m going to keep coming up with whacky ideas to raise awareness and funds.

Every bucket adds up.

I kick off my 50 state tour in Delaware (the first state) on August 1st. Please help me keep the momentum going by doing your part to bring awareness and support to the fight against ALS. People confronted by ALS need our help!
