ALS Across America

Daniel Montes, San Diego, California

Greater San Diego Chapter

Daniel Montes devoted his life being a man of God for 23 years, but Lou Gehrig’s Disease has prompted him to serve others as an ALS activist.  The onetime minister at New Seasons Church now works with The ALS Association to spread awareness of this neurodegenerative disease, particularly to Spanish-speaking San Diegans. Doctors diagnosed Montes with the disease in November 2011.

For his efforts, The Association’s Greater San Diego Chapter is honoring Montes and his wife and caregiver, Estela, in May during ALS Awareness Month for the annual “ALS Across America” campaign.

Montes draws on his family and community resources to cope with the disease.  In February 2012, he appeared on the San Diego affiliate of the Univision TV channel, which depicted his daily struggles with ALS.

“Daniel’s appearance on Univision inspired everybody who saw it,” said chapter Executive Director Tom Courtney. “He is constantly seeking to do more to help his family and to rally the community for awareness and support for ALS research and care.”  Montes and Estela plan on attending the chapter’s annual Walk to Defeat ALSŪ on October 13, 2012.

Courtney said that Montes and his family plan to continue to work with local media during May and throughout the rest of the year to spread ALS awareness.
