David and Julia Williams

David and Julia Williams complement one another.  David’s outgoing personality as reflected in his infectious smile meshes well with his wife’s calm, understanding demeanor.  These contrasting, albeit interdependent, qualities help the couple in their battle with ALS, which David was diagnosed with in February 2007.  The Williamses work closely with The ALS Association’s Rocky Mountain Chapter to educate others about the impact ALS has on people.

For their efforts, the chapter is honoring the couple in May during ALS Awareness Month for the annual “ALS Across America” campaign.

“David & Julia have a tremendously optimistic spirit which is reflected in everything they do - whether facing personal challenges or supporting other ALS families

with their hard-gained knowledge of life with Lou Gehrig’s Disease,” said Suzanne Schrag, care services coordinator at the chapter. “The Williamses are both open and willing to tell their story, as well as the stories of many others they have befriended along the journey with ALS, if it will help someone else going through a similar situation.”

The couple consistently serves as a support system at the chapter’s monthly support group meetings in Denver and fundraisers, including the annual Walk to Defeat ALSŪ.  At the support group meetings, the chapter provides resources to attendees, and those with ALS and their families share their stories about their lives with Lou Gehrig’s Disease.  “They are also the biggest champions of The ALS Association Rocky Mountain Chapter,” Schrag said, “always attending educational events and making sure the community knows about these events as well.”

Chapter Executive Director Pam Rush-Negri said the Williamses plan to attend the annual National ALS Advocacy Day and Public Policy Conference in Washington, D.C. along with chapter staff and volunteers as they did in 2011.
